제2언어 학습을 위한 3단계: Grace Kim

제2언어 학습에 대하여 검색하다가 우연히 흥미로운 동영상을 발견하였습니다. 한국인 이름으로는 김신영인데 영어 이름은 Grace입니다. 미국 텍사스에서 태어났고 한국 출신입니다. 2018년 영상이니 보건대 15세 정도 되었을 것 같습니다. 5세 때 사우디 아라비아로 이사했고 한국 대통령이 되는 것이 꿈이라고 하네요. 자신의 이야기에서 그녀는 제2언어를 배우는 3가지 단계를 설명하고 있습니다. 아직 꼬마 아가씨 같은데 대담함과 머뭇거림도 없이 간결하게 말해서 저도 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 한국에서 조만간 대통령 후보로 보았으면 합니다~~

I'm living in a multicultral life. I'm from a Korean family, but I was born in the States and lived there until I was five. Then I moved to Saudi which was a totally new environment to me. Flowing around these various cultures, I got interested in languages. Currently, I'm learning Arabic. It is fasinating but hard at the same time. Arabic is nothing like the languages I've been speaking with. 

저는 다문화 속에서 살고 있습니다. 저는 한국 사람이지만 미국에서 태어났고 제가 5살이 될 때까지 미국에서 살았습니다. 그리고 저에게는 완전히 새로운 환경인 사우디로 이사했습니다.  이러한 다양한 문화 속에서 살면서 저는 지금 아랍어를 배우고 있습니다. 아랍어는 매력적이지만 동시에 어렵기도 합니다. 아랍어는 제가 말했던 언어와는 완전히 다릅니다. 

But I found out that my struggle is not only because of the difference between them. It's also because I want to speak it fluently. In summary, I want to be fantastic though I don't have no idea of it. So can you speak a really different language, but still be good. Thinking of my own experience, I found three steps. But before I dig into the steps, I want to ask you a question. Learning a foreign language is hard. Right? But why is that? Yes. It could be because of the different sounds, different letters, a different grammar structure. But is that all? In my opinion, the biggest reason is because people are afraid to be wrong.

그러나 저의 투쟁은 언어들 간의 차이 때문뿐이 아님을 발견했습니다. 그 언어를 유창하게 말하기를 원하기도 때문입니다. 요약하면 저는 정말 잘하고 싶은데 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠다는 것입니다. 정말로 다른 언어를 말할 수 있다는 것은 정말 좋은 일입니다. 저의 경험에서 생각해 보면 저는 세 개의 단계를 발견했습니다. 그러나 그 단계들을 파고들기 전에 여러분에게 질문 하나를 하고 싶습니다. 외국어를 배운다는 것은 어렵지요? 맞나요? 그런데 왜 어려울까요? 네. 다른 소리, 다른 글자, 다른 문법 구조 때문일 수 있습니다. 그런데 그게 전부일까요? 제 의견으로 가장 큰 이유는 사람들이 틀리는 것을 무서워하기 때문입니다. 

And that is the first step. Don't be afraid of failure. Be wrong, make mistakes, fail, you should not be ashamed of those. This is an important step. Because by failing, you can make great progress. Don't believe me? Then  listen to my story. Once I had to write a word in Arabic, meaning 'achievement', but I accidentally wrote a word that meant 'excretion'. Eventually I failed writing that word. But you know what? I never forgot those words. It's just stuck in my head and this is how I realized that learning from failure. Is it much more efficient than just mechanical memorization?

그것이 첫 번째 단계입니다. 실패를 두려워하지 마세요. 틀리는 것, 실수하는 것, 실패하는 것, 그런 것에 대해서 부끄러워할 필요가 없습니다. 이것이 중요한 단계입니다. 왜냐하면 실수하면서 여러분은 큰 발전을 이룰 수 있기 때문입니다. 저를 못 믿으시나요? 그러면 제 이야기를 들어보세요. 한번 저는 아랍어로 '성취'라는 단어를 써야 했는데 실수로 '배설물'이란 단어를 써버렸습니다. 결국 그 단어를 쓰는데 실패한 것입니다. 그런데 아시나요? 그 단어들을  결코 잊을 수 없었습니다. 그 단어들은 제 머리에 박혔고 그래서 '실패에서 배운다'는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 단순히 기계적인 암기보다 훨씬 더 효율적이지 않나요? 

Also it's not only me that saying this. Experts also proved this too. According to Harvard Business Review, managers in vast majority of enterprises such as financial services, product design, hospitals, and even NASA's Space Shuttle program genuinely wanted their organizations 'learn from failure' to improve future performance. Never forget that failure is nothing to be ashamed of. You learn from it. 

저만 이런 말을 하는 것이 아닙니다. 전문가들도 이것을 증명했습니다. Harvard Business Review에 의하면 금융 서비스, 제품 디자인, 병원, 심지어 나사의 우주선 프로그램과 같은 많은 기업의 매니져들은 자신의 기관들이 '실패에서 배워서' 미래의 수행을 향상하기를 원했습니다. 실패는 부끄러워할 것이 전혀 아닙니다. 실패에서 여러분은 배웁니다.

And the second step is to find a guide. Valuer helps you learn but you do need someone to help you out with their mistakes. My guide is my Arabic teacher. She helps me through my learning process. But, of course, it is definatley okay though you don't have a language teacher. Look around. People would love to teach you their native language. For example, like me. If any of you wants learn Korean, I would be more than glad to help you. To people the fact itself that a foreigner is trying to learn their language makes them delighted. So look around and find a guide. 

그리고 두 번째 단계는 가이드를 찾은 것입니다. 감정인은 여러분이 배울 수 있게 도울 수 있지만, 그들의 실수로 여러분을 도울 누군가를 찾을 필요는 없습니다. 제 가이드는 제 아랍 선생님입니다. 그녀는 저의 학습 과정을 통해 저를 돕습니다. 그러나 물론 여러분에게 언어 선생님이 없어도 괜찮습니다. 주위를 돌아보세요. 사람들은 그들의 모국어를 여러분에게 가르치는 것을 좋아할 것입니다. 예로 저와 같이 말입니다. 만일 여러분 중에서 누군가가 한국어를 배우기를 원한다면 저는 기쁘게 여러분을 도울 것입니다. 외국인이 자신의 언어를 배우고자 한다는 사실이 사람들을 즐겁게 합니다. 주위를 돌아보시고 가이드를 찾으시기 바랍니다. 

Finally last step is to be passionate. Passion is powerful. Sometimes you might get down when you find something challenging. For example, I found it really tough to learn the two forms of words in Arabic. Feminine and masculine. It was also hard to understand. Why they divided word into two groups? Why couldn't they just keep the same for everyone like other languages? But as I got to know Arabic better, some part of it just helped me understand. For me, Arabic is like a bridge that connects me with a really different culture. And I guess that is why I'm passionate about it. 

마지막 단계는 정열적이어야 한다는 것입니다. 정열은 강력합니다. 어떤 것에 도전할 때 여러분은 좌절할 수 있습니다. 예로 아랍어로 단어의 두 형태를 배우는 것이 저는 너무 힘들었습니다. 여성형과 남성형 말입니다. 그리고 이해하기 어려웠습니다. 왜 그들은 단어를 두 그룹으로 나누었을까? 다른 언어들처럼 같은 형을 유지할 수 없었을까? 그러나 제가 아랍 글자를 알게 되면서 그러한 어떤 부분은 제가 이해할 수 있도록 도움을 주었습니다. 저에게 아랍어는 정말로 다른 문화를 저와 연결하는 다리 같은 존재입니다. 그래서 저는 언어를 배울 때 정열적이어야 한다고 생각하는 이유입니다.  

Just remember when you're full of passion, there is nothing that can stop you from meeting your goal. Learning a language is difficult. But when you're not afraid to fail, find someone to help you out, and be passionate, you will be more than ready to learn or speak a foreign language. Thank you.
